This Cape Cod home originally consisted of a First Floor with a Livingroom, small Dining and Breakfast Rooms as well as a small Kitchen, a small office that was most likely a covered open porch in its original state, in addition to two bedrooms and a bathroom. Nothing had been updated in years. The second floor was a typical Cape Cod layout with two bedrooms and one bathroom. Two small dormers helped increase the amount of usable space.

The objective on the first floor was to create more open living space, develop a larger Dining Room, a larger Kitchen with an attached Breakfast Room, a Great Room, a Powder Room and Laundry facilities on the main living level.

The objective on the second floor was to increase its size to include four bedrooms, and three bathrooms, which would include a Master Suite with a large Bathroom and Walk-In closet.

The Design Intent was to create all of this space without dramatically increasing the size of the residence as perceived from the street, keeping it in scale with the neighboring structures and its property size, and incorporating some New England flair.

This was achieved by maintaining its Cape Cod style, extending the rear out slightly, and enlarging the main roof structure by making it deeper and slightly taller. In addition, a number of dormers were added to the front and rear of the structure to create the volume needed to meet the program requirements.

There was one large bedroom on the first floor that was converted to a Dining Room. The other bedroom was increased in depth by adding a seven foot addition to the rear, which permitted the space to become a new Kitchen and Breakfast Room.

The existing Kitchen which was in the center rear of the house, was long and narrow. A nine foot extension was added, and the combined space became a Great Room. This Great Room is located behind the existing Living Room. A large opening with double pocket doors was added between these two spaces to create a more open plan, and permit the two spaces to be used jointly when desired. The remaining portion of the first floor was modified so it would include an Office, a Piano Room, and Mud Room with a Laundry and Power Room included, as well as an exit to the rear yard.

The more dramatic alteration was the enlargement of the second floor, which increased from about 600 square feet to almost 1500 square feet, without making the building envelope looking oversized. The double from dormer created interesting spatial features in the two front bedrooms. The lower roof profile on the left side of the front elevation was raised to permit a Master Bath and Walk-In Closet plan to be developed. Two dormers out the rear were created for the remaining two bedrooms, which are linked together by a long shed dormer with square windows, which encloses two bathrooms and the Main Hall.

Such detailing as the open eaves with the exposed rafters added some special character not commonly seen in residence today. This in addition to the sweeping roof line on the front elevation, the authentic stone and brick work, and the double dormer resulted in a simple but elegant style.
