This historic Residence dates back as far as the late 18th century and is located on an oversized lot which includes a Carriage House, detached Garage and a Pool. The primary residence is situated towards the front of the lot and a stone dust drive loops around the Residence to a long straight drive flanked by 80 foot trees evenly spaced on each side of the drive. This drive provides access to the Carriage House, detached Garage, Pool and open yard. The original structure was built on fieldstone foundation walls as thick as two feet. The original framing is rough cut in many locations.

The Clients needs in this case were to create a grande living space which viewed the rear yard and all of its classic amenities. The existing plan did not have any significant living space facing the rear yard. Namely, a small Den and a Mud Room abutted the rear yard, with all primary living space facing the street side. In addition, due to the age of the residence, second floor living space had low perimeter walls with sloping ceiling in a number of locations. In addition, it appeared that some modification had been made to the residence well over 100 years ago that resulted in some confusing circulation and inefficient use of space.

The design solution was to add a grand living space along the rear of the existing residence which would include a Great Room, A Dining Area and an Updated Kitchen. An attached two-car Garage was also included in the expansion. New construction above would include a Master Bedroom Suite with abundant closet space, a Bath with a fireplace, and a Guest Suite. A two-story balcony viewing into the new dining area serves as a link between the bedroom suites. All of the new spaces would have a clear view of the yard and amenities. Beneath all of this is a grande recreational space in the new basement. The existing Kitchen which was located in the center of the residence was transformed into a large Entry Foyer which serves as a connecting link to the existing Dining Room, the new Kitchen, the main Hall, and Great Room. One key modification was to connect the original Entry Foyer which is located on the street side of the residence to the new Entry Foyer located on the side elevation. The side entry has been the primary entrance used for years. By connecting these two entry areas with a new Hall, all internal circulation problems were eliminated and the original entry which was once an 18 foot deep dead end now runs almost 70 feet terminating against the new Dining Area which has a window wall and six skylights viewing the rear yard. To more clearly define the side entry as the primary entry of the residence, a 70 foot long wrap-around porch was added. Over 3500 square feet of living space was added, as well as a 1700 square foot finished basement and two-car Garage.
